Vegan Farmer?? Well Almost

Vegan and Farmer dont quite go hand in hand now do they? Nothing like telling someone, “Yah, I’m a farmer. I have sheep, chickens, rabbits, ducks, turkeys, and pigs that I raise for meat. Oh you want to go to lunch?? I need a place thats Vegan.”  They of course give you the weirdest look ever! So here is the deal. I’m NOT vegan, But I have to eat vegan..sort of.

About two years ago, almost three now, I started having issues. It was around the time I switched everything to organic around my homestead. It started off that I couldnt drink milk from the store. Well that’s ok because I wanted to go raw anyway and guess what? I could drink raw. Woohoo! Then I found out I had a gluten intolerance. Well that totally sucked butt and I did a post on that. I started freakin out because I love me my grain carbs and I was making everything from scratch!! Bread, pasta, cake, cookies…argh..I’m drooling! Then I found out I was intolerant to eggs. Soon it was peanuts… Yeah I was going nuts..not literally though!  What the heck was going on with me??!!  It’s come to the point now that I can not have any dairy at cheese, no raw milk, no kefir, no yogurt… I feel nauseated when I eat peanuts, chicken, pork, eggs, gluten, I missing anything;…Man I hope not because whats left?? Veggies and fruit!

How can I be a farmer raising meat for others and our family when I cant eat anything? About the only meat I can eat at the moment is grassfed animal meat. Rabbit because we feed no grain, grassfed beef, and our own grassfed lamb. Thats a short list..although two of those are extremely economical for us to raise here but still. Well on top of all this I am diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. So life so far as been a real bumpy, learning curve, trip right now. About 6-8 weeks ago I started doing Insanity…sorry I didnt finish posting on my days   :(..anywho I figured if I am going to hurt, I”ll give my body a reason! Well after a month into it I hurt my knees and they still hurt even after dumping that program. I have many other videos that I can use that are not so extreme but my weight is not coming off.  Researching the web brought about a lot of changes for me.

I came across someone saying I should watch Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. That is changed their life. So I did. Its on Netflix and Hulu, you guys should check it out because IT has changed my life!! Seriously.  This man Joe Cross is an inspiration. He was rich to begin with but now he’s even richer because he found a need in America and across the world and that is to eat healthier. He’s all about juicing to change your life. Now before I go any further, I’m going to tell you, its expensive. I totally get why poor people are unhealthy. We really cant afford for me to keep eating this way. Notice I said me..not my family. Here in good ol Indiana shopping at Aldi’s, its $100 a week just for meals for me. Then another $100 for the rest of the family.

It would be so easy to go on a $60 a month pill for my fibro versus $400 a month in actual food. I’m sure if you did the same juice multiple times a week it might be cheaper, but its about variety and color so I dont do that.  This is why healthcare is so easy to go to instead of using what God has given us here on Earth to use. A person making minimum wage with a house payment and a car payment cant afford to juice and smoothie, salad, and fruit their way to health. This is a sad world we live in, but its the truth!

Sorry I”m going off on a tangent. So I took the plunge one week when we had extra money. I juiced for breakfast and a snack after lunch. One juice split in half because it was about a quart. I still ate lots of processed stuff that I could handle because it was cheaper. I had no idea how to prepare meals that were real food that didnt have eggs, cheese, milk, flour, or meat in them! Those are staples for most Americans and the homesteader! Well I started noticing a difference in my body. I didnt hurt as much when I got up in the morning. That difference just in a week made me take the plunge to do Joe’s 10 Day plan.

In that 10 day plan you eat, juice, and make smoothies. He has a grocery list and recipes to follow, all Vegan by the way. Easy peasy!! So after the 10 days what have I noticed? Except for weather changes that affect millions of us, I no longer hurt when I wake up. I still have fatigue, but its so minimal I just schedule a small nap in my day, most days. Instead of being confined to the couch. I am able to work hard on my homestead and not have to take days laying on the couch for my body to recover like before. I can eat one of those “intolerance” foods again, but only one and only once a week. I havent noticed lbs dropping like flies like some other juicing people but fibromyalgia is an inflammatory disease. My body is working so hard to stay uninflamed that I am ok with taking forever to lose the weight…ok not really but I’m going with it   😉  I dont feel bloated, exhausted all day, FAT…my joints don’t ache, my stomach doesnt feel like I have heartburn, I can actually fall asleep at night. I feel awesome!

So for now I’m sticking with the whole Veganism because my body cant handle the things vegetarians and omnivores eat!  I listen to my body and if I want a small piece of lamb, a burger, or some rabbit soup made with gluten free pasta, then I abide. My body really doesnt crave it honestly. Yes I still raise animals and I”m not a Peta fan, but my body right now needs only fruits and veggies, minimal grains, and tons of water so I’m going to do it. I will find the money somehow to keep going as long as I can. I highly suggest if you are suffering from any sort of inflammatory disease that you give this a try. Be sure to add in cinnamon, tumeric, ginger, and garlic! Juice once a day if you have to, make a smoothie if you dont have a juicer, and get 90% of your nutrients from veggies and fruit if you can. It will change your life, I promise!  Even if you are dirt poor, watch Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. It will inspire you to do whatever it takes to try it just for a week. Use his plans on his site, he has pdf’s for free. As spring approaches I’m looking forward to a huge drop in grocery bills for me because I can grow so much on my own 🙂 I encourage you to do the same!

Happy Homesteading!!   😀

Insanity 56&55

I hope you all had a great Christmas. Our family enjoyed a wonderful morning of working out to the pure cardio insanity video. My husband and I woke up a bit early to get the workout in before all the gifts by the millions of internet users started being used. We do not have the pure cardio video, its the only one that the fitness center is lacking. I guess someone really loved it! Anyway we had to use one from online. Thank you to the blogger that uploaded all the videos to his blog   😉

Pure Cardio is horridly great. lol  I know that is a bit odd to say but it really is true. Its the hardest video we have hit yet and there is nothing but pretty much a cardio workout that will leave you passed out on the floor. Yet in all the sore horridness of not breathing and sweating to death, you love it because when you get done you realize what you’ve done. Even if you do it the easiest you can and with modifications galore, you still accomplished more than you ever thought you could. Love/hate relationship at its best. We were halfway through the warmup and my one son who is doing this with us, came down the stairs and gave us the look of death. So we apologized half winded and invited him to join.

The rest of the day we spent with my side of the family at my sisters where we ate ourselves to death. We probably totally undid what the video did but what a great day to have that problem lol. Had it been another video I”m not sure I would have felt good eating that amount. My son that is exercising with us got a pull up bar that goes in the doorway. He’s been doing pull ups in his closet and he’s getting too tall for that to work anymore. This one is great because he can do it himself and now he also has something that will hold his feet so he can do sit ups too.

I combined two days because we went to our old neighbors yesterday too and didnt get back until late. Today I”m stuck at work in the fitness center. Yes the day after can imagine the flock of people here right now……  *crickets*    I just slapped on some Christian tunes on the speakers and am blasting my God loving music.

Today’s insanity workout is a repeat of the first video we did the Pyrometrics so I am hoping I can actually get through it fairly well. I think the plan is for my husband to come up here once he is up and going and we will workout while I get paid, in the back yoga area. There is a huge tv there and a nice floor that should have us be able to hold the push up position a lot better than our carpet at home. We will see. I know he wants to change his tires today so that may take over his day and I may be forced to work out tonight. After I get off work this afternoon we have some errands to run so it wont be till about dinner time we would be able to work out.

Have I mentioned how much I hate working out in the afternoon and evening. I’d rather workout bright and early right after chores and then be able to take a shower and enjoy my day. It gives me a chance to keep using my muscles all day and continually stretching them rather than workout at night and go to bed only to wake up all stiff the next morning.

Well I’m super bored and its only 7:20 am…so I think honestly I’m going to nap here at work.

Happy Homesteading and Merry Christmas!!   😀

Insanity Day 57

Wow yesterday I was sore. I kept moving and walking to try to keep my hamstring from locking up but it was slow going all day. Not only did the muscles around my knees hurt from the previous days but now I had to try to compensate for this other leg. I decided to break out my old massage chinese liniments. There is an ice liniment, a heat liniment, and a combo liniment. I went with the combo. Its pretty much icyhot without all the extra crud you dont need. I smothered my entire back leg with it and around the knee. What people dont realize is your muscles have two attachment sites and if you dont put stuff on really does no good. Because I knew anatomy I knew I had pulled my short head of my bicep femoris. I know.. fancy. So I made sure I placed liniment on both attachments of that muscle, set it in with some moist heat and went to bed. This morning I was good as gold!..ok about silver..ish…

Todays workout is a cardio recovery. We watched the video ahead of time last night so I could figure out if I could do it or not. He still does a lot of leg work in that video and its more of a yoga thing so I chose not to do cardio recovery. No way my leg would heal if I placed that much work on it. So today I opted for my go to core work video. I dont feel that insanity at this point was working my abs much so I opted for a Yoga/pilates mix from Crunch. I know…bad Eileen..its not from beach body..oh well Crunch videos are awesome and I have a few I love including this one. Here it is.workoutvideo

This is my all time favorite video for ab and arm work. Plus it was super great for my hamstring because only a few exercises actually use that and I could mostly modify with bending my leg and just using my glute. Dont let this cute girl fool you. You will definitely get an upper arm and ab workout and it is very comparable to the cardo recovery and I dont feel it is putting me behind at all.

This morning I asked my hubby if he was going to work out first and he said he couldnt physically do it right now. I know he is pushing more than I am but I know my limits and if I have to do the entire insanity program again I will. I love the workouts..well minus the cardio recovery really. But once I’m not in pain anymore I’ll end up dumping ellen and going back to the insanity and doing the cardio recovery.

Keep strong, keep fit, so you can keep

Happy Homesteading!!   😀

Insanity Day 58

SNAP! That’s what I heard, felt, as I was almost mid workout today. Not good people. I was able to do most of the warm up and all of the stretching. I thought I was fairly warmed up. I about halfway through the video. We had to do these jump to one side and touch the floor then jump to the other side and touch the floor. Well I was winded so I just decided to stay in a squat position and just alternate one side and the other..apparently not a great idea. I did something to one of my hamstrings. You know those things that hold you up as you balance on one leg to put on undies and pants..yeah that one lol. I did manage to mostly finish the workout though. I just was very careful and if it hurt too badly I modified even more. Then into the ice bath for sure. I’ll nurse it all today with a heating pad and ice and see where we are tomorrow.

Last night my hubby and I went on the look for a recovery drink. They want you to drink a recovery drink with a 4:1 ratio of carbs: protein. Of course everything you find at the store is opposite that. So after a day of digging on the net to make our own, trips to walmart, GNC, and walgreens we came up with a mixture of things. The main thing you need apparently is amino acids after your workout. We found a bottle of this creatine

<– which is amino acids and carbs.

We mixed it with this protein powder.

It has protein and carbs. When you add the two together you get close to 44 carbs to 16 protein which is pretty close to that close as we can come versus buying the actual recovery p90x stuff that is close to $60. That only gave us a 30 day supply so between my hubby and I using it we would need 4 bottles of it for the Insanity 60 days challenge.  By buying this we will save about $15 and we dont have to wait for shipping. Which you know isnt much but its Christmas time and new years and the wrong time to be shipping stuff. We might try the p90x stuff next round or not. I think honestly the creatine powder alone would be enough and just eat carbs. The only thing I dont like is that is spikes insulin it says to help absorb the creatine so I guess no more candy…except chocolate..thats not candy..that is my sustainable lifeforce lol.

All and all I feel really awesome..minus the leg. I actually woke up at 3am and wanted to work out. Maybe I should have lol. maybe that would have made the difference in my leg. The only reason I didnt was because no one would have believed me that I worked out at 3am   😦   Oh well..hopefully tomorrow will be just as great and my leg heals fairly well today.

Happy Homesteading!!   😀

Insanity Day 59

Well I’m alive. My hubby and I sat down last night and watched the first dvd. We saw many moved that were on the fitness test but it was almost twice as long and way more intense. We thought no way!!  We promised each other that if we ever were able to go through the entire video at the speed and intensity they do, that we would go out to eat.. At olive garden..salad lol. I have news for him I’m going to eat a steak with that salad!

Day 59 is the Pyrometric cardio dvd. I did it..all exercises..its just at a granny pace and some exercises I only got one good one in with fairly good form but I can honestly say I gave it my best effort and got through the entire thing. Good thing we do it 2 more times this week! Then right after I took an ice bath. We live on a bi-level home so thats been interesting having to actually use the rail to climb the stairs and limiting my journeys lol.

I kept my heart in the target range of 140-180 given the intensity we were suppose to work at.  Here is the range my hubby and I are using because this is for our age..ok well his but I’m only two years under him.

A lot of exercises were moderated to still give me benefits but to also not have me working so hard I passed out. Target heart range is there for a reason and eventually I’ll be able to get through this with a little bounce and spring in my step. Even my son who is 12 couldnt get through the exercises without moderation and he works out a lot.

So today..end result is video done, sore as can be, hungry beyond belief, and super proud of myself for getting through the entire video.   Now…for a nap lol.

Happy Homesteading!!   😀

OMG this was stupid. I”m going to say this right now. In my last post I told you that my husband was going to do Insanity. You know why he’s really doing it?? So he can be as buff as his bestie who does p90x. Since we cant afford any equiptment and I work in a fitness center (I know you’re laughing right. After telling you how much I dont work out..seriously I do work in a gym.) We have copies of both p90x and insanity. So we went with insanity. No equipment to buy but we are missing one dvd in the series the Cardio Plus. We’ve decided to just do another dvd we like and feel is similar rather than purchase one dvd.

For those of you that dont know..Insanity is the toughest workout put on a dvd. Seriously. In the videos there are no fat people..there are no slightly fat people. There are only ripped people who have done this entire program and then recorded a video with Shaun T pretending like they are doing it for the first time. But eye candy Shaun is a big help when you need to stop and catch your breath.   😉    It is 60 days to an Insane you!  Day 1 is a fitness test. Let me just say that the fitness test is just to see how bad you are in the beginning so you can see results happening each time.

I failed the fitness test. Not only did I only make it halfway through before I about passed out and puked, but it took us pausing the video after each segment afterwards for like 5 minutes so we all, hubby included, didnt pass out. I already know from long ago doing the Biggest Loser dvd’s that I in no way shape or form will be able to get through any new dvd right off the bat so I took it as slow and I could. I gave it my best effort and never puked or passed out. I did have to rest for a long while between sets but I have a score on each one. Hubby ended up puking because I’m sure he thought he was a big strong man who was in shape and was sadly mistaken. As I sit and write this he is asleep on the couch hehe.

I unfortunately do not have the guts to post my before pictures. I took them, shuddered, and still hold a hope that it will get better in a couple weeks. The fitness test was HARD!! I have no idea how the hell I”m going to get through even half of the first dvd if I cant even pass the fitness test lol. We shall see. BTW if you are overweight at all, I strongly encourage you to do the Biggest Loser dvd’s until you can do them all the way through and they are EASY..then try Insanity. I however am totally INSANE…at least for the next 60 days. I may not be alive after a week to blog about it, but I will have died more fit then I am now!!  I will try to keep you updated as I go. I’m SSSOOOOO fatigued right now from this fibro that I could fall asleep for hours..but I have to leave to go to work for 2 hours. I hope I dont fall asleep there!

Happy INSANE Homesteading!!   😀

My weight journey

I’m fat. Yup I am. I dont really care much. I dont seem to have time to work out much with the farm and gardening. Plus now that I’ve started selling Usborne Books and I’m still homeschooling..its pretty busy. I’ve never been one to work out at all really. My whole life I was the fat friend. It sucks to even remotely try to work out because with fibromyalgia even farming puts me so exhausted I need to sleep pretty much right after chores. Chronic fatigue sucks. Anyone with it will agree. To exercise means to sleep for an hour and half minimum afterwards which puts a damper in your day.  Let me tell you about my pack of friends.

My pack formed in 3rd grade with the addition of the last member. We have been besties ever since. We have my friend Sandi. She is the workout gooroo. She is all about fitness 24/7. She’s the one you see running with short and a sports bra in the winter time. She’s the triathlon runner, the iron man competitor, the completely super skinny, no body fat to be found one of our group. The second is Jeannie. She is the one who can eat whatever and she never gains weight. She’s been skinny all her life. She never really has to try. She’s the one everyone hates because she’s eating a cheeseburger and fries and we are all eating salad getting fat lol.  Then there is Lisa. She was normal weight. She was active in swim team and gymnastics but didnt really work out a ton yet she kept her body weight. She rode horses which helped too. Just your average american who ate consciously and kept her weight in check.

Then there is me. My whole mom and dad’s side of the family are fat, like 200 +. My mom was heavy all her life and I had her body type. You know the one that looks at food and gains weight even if you didnt eat anything. We ate out of the garden and we ate everything made from scratch pretty much. The best ingredients we could afford. Our family didnt work out ever. It was a struggle for me to stay thin enough. In high school I weighted 130 which was about 20 lbs over what my BMI said. It seemed that I could try and try but no matter how much I worked out I never dropped enough weight and it became a chore.

Over the years the 4 of us changed. We grew, aged, had kids, but today our story is pretty much the same. Sandi the fitness gooroo, jeannie works out doing p90x when she has time but has small kids so it makes it hard. She is still skinny but no longer can eat whatever. So she consciously eats and is still skinny. Lisa still rides horses and is about the same weight. Eats fairly well and also has kids. I grew and grew and grew..but not tall..out lol.  I topped 210 right after the pregnancy of my second child. Took forever to drop the weight.  At one time I actually dedicated myself to working out 6 days a week for 45 intense minutes. I dropped down to 150. I’m 5′ 5. So my BMI was still overweight even though I looked really skinny. Looking back and pictures I actually looked sickly but I was “skinny” for the first time ever. However if I skipped one day of intense working out, the weight would come back on. My ideal BMI weight is like 130 and eventually by not hitting my goal, it became extremely unrealistic and unfun for me. So I quit. That’s when I went back up towards 200 slowly and surely until I weighed myself one day and dont think so! Then went on my Nourishing Traditions journey.

I’m not totally 100% following the Nourishing Traditions. I eat organic, homegrown stuff when possible and other months when I’m not growing it, I eat store stuff. I cant always afford organic but I still try to make everything from scratch. My weight has maintained at 185 for a long time now. Meanwhile I developed fibromyalgia, intolerance to gluten, eggs, peanuts in large quantities, all milk except raw grassfed, and cheeses except raw. So what is a girl to eat??? Well Veggies and meat. BUT the meat has to be from a grassfed animal only because I react to the grains that are fed. So that puts pigs, chickens, ducks, turkey, and any cow that may eat grain, into a category that if I eat it, I might feel bad. The more grain the animal eats the worse it is. Right now I eat grassfed beef only, pastured chickens, ducks, and turkeys, and no pork. I also eat rabbit because I can pasture them mostly and then do my own mix of fodder, hay and vegetables.

Which brings me finally to Insanity. Not really but the blog is getting long lol. Hubby has been skinny all his life…waist 29 since I’ve known him.  5′ 9, 150 ish..skinny, muscular..the opposite of me lol. He wants to try Insanity. At first I was going to just let him do it..remember I hate exercise. However after watching some of the results I figure if I can not die for 60 days I can at least look decent for a while until my body morphs back into this thing it is now. Besides I have about 60 days before my garden season starts anyway. Maybe I’ll be able to hoe faster and longer   😉

Start the journey with me..into INSANITY.

Happy Homesteading!!   😀

Food Inventory List

I started doing this years ago when I started canning. What is a food inventory list?? Well as the name suggests its a running tally of what you have on hand in your house as far as food, but also goes beyond that. It also counts your non food items and water.

Getting started is super easy. They way I start is what do you eat all the time?? Are you big rice fans? Do you eat potatoes like they are going out of style?  I always start my list with what we eat the most of as far as vegetables and non perishable items. Way back it started as my canning list and now has expanded. Didnt know I kept a list did ya?! Right now all my friends reading this are like..well no but I could see you doing that. I do mine on the computer first and then print it out. This way I can add things if I want to but I have a print out list in case something happens and I cant access my template.

So here is my old canning chart. It’s as easy as starting like this. Back then I only did an inventory every year before winter then I started doing it twice a year. By doing it twice a year you can see how much your family is eating. If you ran out in December you need to stock more. Its a yearly learning curve really.

Canning Guide 2009 2010 Total as of 10/2/10 left over Dehydrated
Greens 10 pt 12 Jj 12 jelly 3 pints Mushrooms 1 qt

Deer ? 0 2 qts 5 pts
Turkey Broth ? 0 2 qts
Turkey ? 0 0
pt=pint    qt=quart  jj=jelly jar
pj= pickle jar    hg= half gallon jar

As you can see it was basic but I made notes as I the strawberry jelly. It all went bad so I needed to hot water bath all jelly for 20 minutes. The last two columns really dont go with the left hand side. Its just hard to put excel on here.

When you can items they can last at least 5 years. I dont go beyond that and every spring/summer when I do my first canning batc,h I pull out everything that is 5 years and bring it upstairs to the main kitchen, then put the old to ones side so I”m not constantly digging in the back to put the newest jars.

What I do now is split everything into catagories. Food: Dehydrated, Canned, Staples. Water: , Non perishable: Toilet paper, paper towel. toothbrushes, shampoos, etc.

Food I also break down into further categories for example if I have Dehydrated Beans..I have green beans, pinto beans, kidney beans..and amount for each of those. As far as animals go, most are either in the freezer or are grassfed. I always make sure I have hay, but if I run out which is what happened this last winter plus our move…I have the option of turning my animals outside on longer grass to fend for themselves if need be because they arent used to only eating commercial feeds. I supplement with alfalfa pellets or grain mixes(only when I have to). Chickens free range all winter also. I do try to keep 200 lbs of feed on hand. I mix my own so usually my chicken feed can also feed my rabbits or my calf if I need it to. Plus well us I guess lol. I have a wondermill hand grinder so I can make flour out of any grain   😉 We now have a continual non electric water source in our barn which is nice. I save water year round in rain barrels. We also have a pond now on the property so my water storage is pretty non existent. I also keep bottles of water in the freezer during the summer months to take up freezer space so it doesnt work as hard and that doubles as water should the power go out for a time.

Some other things I have are two stoves: one electric and one gas stove. We are working on a non electric heat source for the new house this year but that has not stopped us from gathering wood this year. First aid kits for animals in the barn, first aid kits in the house and each vehicle for us. Guns with ammo. Live traps we use all winter. Deep cycle batteries that we can hook up to a power invertor to run something. We have a solar charger for those as well.

It’s not about having everything all at once. It’s about having a little of everything first, then building up what you use the most over a period of time. If you cant can food, go buy cans of stuff. If you dont hunt, go buy bulk of meat products and either put them in a deep freezer or have someone can them for you. You just find ways. You can also buy dehydrated meats and stuff, MRE’s but honestly..I”m only going to eat those if the SHTF. I focus on growing a renewable source of meat like rabbits that can be put outside if I have to and they multiply without much help   😉 Chickens, turkeys all can be kept year round and will forage for food. Grassfed cows and sheep or goats. You start needing land for those animals though if you dont have feed.

Resources for help include Youtube, Online forums, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon…your local library!! People in “the know” survive such catastrophes as a power outage for more than 24 hours. They survive a week where you cant travel because of the blizzard of 78! Make it a point to gain knowledge of how to garden, how to save seeds, how to raise rabbits, chickens, turkeys at the very least. Study and look up Prepping, Preppers, Food Storage without refridgeration, Organic Gardening, Seed Saving, Long term water storage, Trapping, fishing, Raising grassfed animals, Rabbit tractors, chicken tractors, growing tilapia, Building your own solar oven, building your own solar water heater, building your own solar panels, Rocket stoves, and if you want to get really “crazy” you could look up alternative vehicle fuels, how to make your own ammo, security cameras, and the list goes on and on including underground bunkers but we wont go there.

It may seem overwhelming but the food inventory list and stocking that one simple thing, I promise, will stop you from going absolutely crazy if you cant make your weekly shopping trip or your husband gets laid off.

I am here if you need to or want to ask questions and as always…

Happy Homesteading!!   😀

Farming by Months

Last January I wrote a post about Being Prepared. You can read that here: Being Prepared  It is now the next year and it’s October. So again the hype about the winter storms coming…it’s going to be the coldest most bitter winter we’ve seen in a long time….. really? Ok well are you prepared???  You’d think that after the horrid winter we had last year that people would be a little more prepared, but they are not. Yes most are buying propane now while it’s not $6 a gallon, but as far as other preps..non existent.

It’s mainly the time of  year that gets me thinking about this. On our homestead you have months pretty much mapped out. So in case you don’t have a is what you should or could be doing for each month based on what we do. I’m sure we are not listing everything, but its a nice general list.

  • Jan- Start your cold weather seedlings such as celery, broccoli, peas, lettuces and other greens. RELAX!!
  • Feb- Start your beginning summer seedlings like cucumbers, green beans if you want, corn if you want, onions, leeks, whatever else cold weather you didnt start, start working on  your chicken, turkey, rabbit tractors- Start Un-Relaxing   😦
  • March- Start your warm weather vegetables like tomatoes, green peppers – start barn repairs and maintenance -Till part of the garden and Start planting cold weather crops late march (the jan seedlings), purchase live animals to raise for your freezer, finish your animal tractors
  • April- finish planting your cold weather vegetables( your feb seedlings and any other you seed straight into the garden)  and finish tilling the rest of the garden.- start pasturing your rabbits and chicks(on warm days)-deep clean out the barn and start compost piles mixed with grass clippings – do a food inventory and see what you have that you will be saving for the coming winter (start buying extras of stuff all summer)
  • May- Plant the remaining vegetables, weed, pasture animals, finish all other barn projects and start all your summer projects, start gathering wood for winter
  • June, July, August- farming is in full swing, harvest, weed, dehydrate food for winter, can food for winter, all the scraps from canning and regular eating dehydrate into winter food for the rabbits and chickens- dont waste anything!! Whatever you cant use should be in compost piles breaking down all summer. plant cover crops of buckwheat on places that are done harvesting, go on family fishing trips to gather more food for the freezer!
  • September- Do a food inventory and see how much you have on hand for winter-. finish buying remaining products and start putting compost onto the parts of the garden that is done.- Plant cover crops like oats and radishes for over winter on all late harvest areas. Start preparing the barn for winter. Start organizing the freezer to fit the animals you bought.
  • October- Butcher all animals and fill your freezer. Make sure you have your inventory list full or mostly full. Finish garden areas for winter, finish barn projects and get things ready for your year round animals to be overwintered. start hunting for more winter storage(if you cant hunt, find someone that does, if you dont like guns-learn to trap), finish yard clean ups, finish your wood harvest and if you havent already-move seasoned wood into a close area for easy winter reach.
  • November- Brace for that horrid winter coming lol. Finish your minor purchases for winter, finish anything you forgot about..RELAX!!
  • December- Continue to brace for the winter coming that has not yet come… Relax when you hear its still on the way because you have enough!!  RELAX!!

Recently we have been watching Extreme Preppers. Some people call them crazy, but if you watch you get many good ideas! Yes I agree some are just plain nuts, but honestly they all are doing things we should be doing..storing food, water, finding alternatives for when our power is out, and making sure they are safe. Those basic principles are what everyone should be doing. It doesnt matter if you live in an apartment or not. Find a location in the country of a friends house..your “bug out location” as they call it. Plant a garden with them so you can prepare for winter in your apartment. Grow vine foods in your windows, use your fish tank to grow some lettuce. Youtube is filled with prepping secrets and alternative ways of growing food. The only reason that anyone cant be prepared, in my opinion, is you are lazy and dont want to. Well dont be coming to my house! I’ve told you all here what do to!!

Check out my next post on making a food inventory list!

The Do Nothing Farmer

This post comes as a rant really. I have some die hard customers who are awesome. Lately I’ve had a few new ones try to come around. It seems that everyone thinks that farmers do absolutely nothing all day and that they are always home. In today’s culture of the busy city folks, two family incomes, and working 12-14 hours a day, the farmer seems to somehow be exempt from all that.

Here is the reality. We are busier and work longer hours than you do. I mean all of you. Not only do we wake up at the butt crack of dawn to feed everything we have, but we continue till dusk. We feed, we water, we scoop poop, we harvest, we plant, we weed, we take care of injuries, fix things that are broken, chop wood, go to auctions, meet clients, we take care of not only the farm stuff but if your a woman farmer you are taking care of everything else in the house as well. We do dishes, vacuum, clean the entire house, can things, dehydrate things, bake things, make yogurt, make cheese, crochet or knit or spin yarn, we keep the household animals aka children alive. We fix their injuries and fix breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Oh to sit behind a desk all day or have actual conversations with grown adults.,,  To think your farmer has time any hour of the day you choose and whatever day you want for you to show up is just plain WRONG. In case you didn’t know, I’m giving you the heads up now. Farmers are extremely busy all day every day. We dont get snow days off, rainy weather off, or 90+ days off. We are outside working on something or feeding something at the very least.

If you are new to this whole homesteading thing, I’m sorry I’ve come off a bit irritated. You have to be extremely considerate of your farmers time or they will drop you as a client as fast as you can say Manure. When you call and say you are coming at a specific time be ON TIME. We have to drop what we are doing and rearrange our schedule a bit so that we have time to meet with you and talk. If you pick a specific day to come DON’T reschedule unless you absolutely have to. Most of us have our days planned a few in advance and have to again rearrange things so that we have that time. We dont want to be scooping poop while trying to chat with you because you needed to reschedule and the barn should have been cleaned out the last time you were suppose to meet, but we put it off because you were coming and then didn’t. If you have to reschedule DON’T WAIT TILL THE LAST MINUTE. That is the worst thing ever. That is rude and disrespectful.

Today I had a guy text me and tell me he wasn’t coming tonight. Why am I so upset. Well we were suppose to meet last week around wed. We set up a time for him to come, 6:30. He canceled at 6 because he wanted to bring his wife and she couldnt make it. That is fine. I totally understand. He is a new client and wants to see the farm together. So we set up a time for saturday at 6:30. He texts me again at 6 and tells me he cant make it because he would like to bring his parents out also and they have previous engagements. Sigh..ok…so we reschedule for Monday at 6:30. He texts me again around 5 ish to tell me that he is unable to make the appointment because a client of his needed something. So being the nice person I am I reschedule again for today at 6:30. So far each time he has picked the time and the day. He also had pre-ordered 25 meat birds. I really needed to talk to him about the size he wanted them and if he cared if some were a bit smaller because I would like to give them to him all at once. Today we text a few times and of course it had rained a ton all day today so at 5 he says its still a bit rainy. I text back saying there are no more storms in the forcast and tonight is still fine to come out. He text me at 6:24 saying he will not be out because his wife doesnt feel like coming out.

ARE YOU SERIOUS?? I’m sorry but I have been more than nice. I put off projects today because I knew I wouldnt get them done before his arrival. One project that got put on hold was putting in a new window into my rabbit barn because it broke out the other day and I dont have one!! The rain has been pouring into my rabbitry for the last few days because he was suppose to come and I didnt have time between the rain and his arrival to start the process of putting it in. I sent him a polite text that I was hoping to talk to him about the chickens. I will just get them butchered and he will have to accept the size they are. If he decides he doesnt want them to let me know so I can resell them. I also told him that the next day he schedules he needs to come and not reschedule because it has been stressful trying to be home.

I will give you a little tip. If you are constantly late and rescheduling times, please dont bother to contact me at all. It’s normally a 3 strikes you’re out rule for me. I will let you in on another secret. I dont NEED you to be a client. I have people who would gladly show up and meet with me. They will buy my stuff the same as you, but they wont inconvenience me. I try really hard to be available but just imagine if all my clients were constantly rearranging and rescheduling. I would never get anything done. Please dont be one of those people. Make your farmer your best friend and treat him like you would a king. Remember he’s the source of your dinner   😉
